As an entrepreneur, your schedule is likely packed with back-to-back meetings, deadlines, and other business-related tasks. It can be challenging to prioritize your health and wellness when you're constantly on the go. However, neglecting your health can lead to decreased productivity, burnout, and other health problems. Therefore, it's essential to find ways to incorporate healthy lifestyle habits into your busy schedule.
In this article, we will provide 11 healthy lifestyle tips for busy entrepreneurs to boost productivity and stay healthy. From planning your meals and snacks to practicing stress-reducing techniques, these tips will teach you how to stay healthy and achieve your business goals. By prioritizing your health and wellness, you'll be able to improve your productivity, increase your energy levels, and reduce stress levels.
11 Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle
They say the more you sacrifice in the beginning, the more you’ll receive in the end. “Pay the price now to pay any price later” as Grant Cardone puts it. This rings very true when it comes to making sacrifices with frivolous things. Eating or going out and drinking one less time a week is a small sacrifice to pay that may result in some sort of discomfort or FOMO in the short term, but will result in a hell of a result in the long term when it comes to your business endeavors. But what happens when you start making a ridiculous amount of sacrifices in life? What happens when you start sacrificing your health for the sake of “building your business/brand”? You may think that sacrificing all that extra sleep or eating out as opposed to meal prepping may give you more time to grind, but these cause so much more damage than they do good.
Here are some common 11 healthy lifestyle tips for busy entrepreneurs to increase their productivity and improve their health:
1. Plan and Prioritize Meals
This simple health tip is probably the most obvious, but for some reason it is the most missed aspect of the health of an entrepreneur. We have all heard the saying “you wouldn’t give a Ferrari regular gas, would you? You need to fuel it with the best stuff!” Same goes for your body. The difference between those top performers who have perfect physiques to those who don’t and aren’t is their nutrition. Top level entrepreneurs know that what they put into their body is important, so that’s why a lot of them use meal services or have people that will make them high-quality food.
Planning your meals and snacks is crucial for busy entrepreneurs, as it can help you maintain a healthy diet and avoid unhealthy food choices. When you're busy with work, it's easy to grab fast food or skip meals altogether, which can lead to low energy levels, decreased productivity, and other health problems. By planning your meals and snacks, you can ensure that you have healthy options available and avoid the temptation to make unhealthy choices.
Health Tips for Meal Prepping:
There are several ways to plan your meals and snacks effectively. One effective strategy is to pack healthy snacks, such as fresh fruit, nuts, or granola bars, to take with you when you're on the go. Meal prepping on the weekends can also be a great way to save time during the week. You can prepare healthy meals in advance and store them in the fridge or freezer for later use. Another option is to cook in bulk and freeze individual portions for quick and easy meals throughout the week.
If you’re just starting out, you might not have the luxury, which means it’s time to learn how to meal prep. Meal prepping is boring and may seem like a waste of a couple hours, but those couple of hours are going to save you time and money during the week as opposed to eating out. Think about it this way, it takes you 2-3 hours to properly meal prep every Sunday so that every meal throughout the week is taken care of. “That’s so much time!” Well, let’s say you eat out for every meal instead. You could use a service like Uber Eats which will deliver food to you, but you’re going to be paying 10x what you would’ve paid had you just meal prepped. Even if you go out to get your own food, you’re wasting about 10 minutes minimum going to go get, wait for, and bring home your meal if it’s all fast food.
Benefits from Meal Planning:
The benefits of planning your meals and snacks are numerous. You'll be able to save time and money by preparing meals in advance and avoiding the need to eat out or order takeout. If you're looking on how to stay healthy, planning your meals can also help you maintain a healthy diet, which can improve your energy levels, boost your immune system, and prevent chronic health conditions. Additionally, by having healthy snacks on hand, you'll be less likely to reach for unhealthy options when you're hungry, helping you stay on track with your health and wellness goals.
2. Optimize Your Sleep Routine
Getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining optimal productivity and overall health. Adequate sleep helps to improve memory, concentration, and decision-making abilities. Unfortunately, for many busy entrepreneurs, sleep is often sacrificed in order to meet the demands of their work. However, prioritizing sleep can actually help boost productivity in the long run.
Tips on Creating a Sleep-Friendly Environment
Creating a sleep-friendly environment and establishing a consistent bedtime routine are important steps in getting better quality sleep. Here are some health tips for creating a sleep-friendly environment:
Ensure that the bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet.
Invest in comfortable bedding and a supportive mattress.
Use aromatherapy or white noise machines to create a relaxing atmosphere.
Avoid using electronics before bed as the blue light can interfere with the natural sleep cycle.
If possible, keep work-related materials out of the bedroom.
Creating Your Bedtime Routine
In addition to creating a sleep-friendly environment, establishing a consistent bedtime routine can help signal to the body that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Here are some healthy lifestyle tips for establishing a bedtime routine:
Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
Engage in relaxing activities such as reading a book, taking a bath, or practicing yoga before bed.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals in the evening.
Dim the lights in the evening to promote the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.
3. Give Yourself a Break
Taking regular breaks throughout the workday is essential for preventing burnout and maintaining productivity. Research has shown that taking breaks can help improve focus, prevent fatigue, and reduce stress. Here's why taking breaks is important:
Improved focus: Taking regular breaks can help improve focus and prevent fatigue, making it easier to tackle tasks with renewed energy.
Decreased stress: Taking breaks can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Stepping away from work can help to clear the mind and prevent burnout.
Increased creativity: Taking a break from work can often lead to new ideas and creative solutions. Sometimes stepping back from a problem can help to see it from a different perspective.
Ideas for how to incorporate breaks into a busy workday:
Take a walk outside: A quick walk outside can help clear your mind and improve focus. Walking is also a great way to get some physical exercise during the workday.
Practice stretching: Take a few minutes to stretch and move your body to prevent stiffness and improve circulation. This can be done at the desk or in a separate space.
Connect with others: Taking a break to chat with a coworker or friend can help break up the monotony of the workday and improve social connections.
Meditate or practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your break time to reduce stress and improve focus. This can be done by finding a quiet space and taking a few minutes to focus on your breath.
Take a power nap: A quick power nap of 10-20 minutes can help refresh the mind and improve focus. This can be done during lunch break or during a designated break time.
4. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is essential for busy entrepreneurs, as it plays a critical role in maintaining physical and mental performance. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive function, making it challenging to focus on important business tasks. Proper hydration can also help regulate body temperature, prevent constipation, and support healthy skin.
Health Tips to Drink More Water
There are several ways to stay hydrated throughout the day, even when you're busy. One of the easiest ways is to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Having water readily available will remind you to drink it regularly. Additionally, make it a habit to drink water with every meal, and set reminders to drink water at regular intervals throughout the day. Consider setting reminders on your phone or computer to ensure you don't forget.
Benefits from Drinking More Water:
There are several advantages to staying hydrated. Drinking enough water helps enhance digestion, lower the incidence of kidney stones, and enhance physical performance. By lowering cravings and fostering satiety, it can also aid in weight loss. Also, staying hydrated can boost mood and cognitive performance while lowering stress and increasing overall productivity. You may enjoy the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle by focusing on your health and fitness goals.
5. Limit Your Screen Time
In today's digital age, it's not uncommon for entrepreneurs to spend a significant amount of time in front of screens. However, excessive screen time can negatively impact productivity and health. Here's why:
Digital eye strain: Staring at a screen for prolonged periods can cause eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, which can affect productivity.
Disrupted sleep: Exposure to blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the natural sleep cycle, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Increased stress and anxiety: Constant connectivity and notifications can increase stress levels and lead to feelings of anxiety.
Strategies for reducing screen time throughout the day:
Take regular breaks: Schedule regular breaks throughout the day to stretch, take a walk, or do some other activity that doesn't involve screens.
Set limits: Use apps or tools that allow you to set limits on your screen time and receive alerts when you've reached your limit.
Establish tech-free zones: Designate certain areas of your home or office as tech-free zones, such as the bedroom or dinner table.
Turn off notifications: Disable non-essential notifications on your phone and computer to minimize distractions and improve focus.
Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine to help reduce stress and increase awareness of your screen time habits.
6. Make the Time to Exercise
For busy businesses, regular exercise is essential because it can help with both physical and emotional health. Many business owners have sedentary lifestyles and spend the majority of their time at desks. This lack of exercise can result in a variety of health issues, such as weight gain, elevated stress levels, and decreased productivity. Entrepreneurs can address these health issues and enhance their general wellbeing by scheduling exercise into their schedules.
Healthy Fitness Tips
Finding time to exercise can be challenging for busy entrepreneurs, but it's not impossible. One effective strategy is to schedule exercise sessions into your calendar, just like you would a business meeting. You can also find activities that can be done during the workday, such as taking a walk during your lunch break or doing a quick workout before starting your workday. Additionally, finding an accountability partner, such as a workout buddy or personal trainer, can help you stay on track with your exercise goals.
Benefits from Exercising
One of the supposed benefits to exercise is that you feel less stressed, but how is this? Basically, by exercising you are causing the release of a ton of hormones in your body that allow you to keep pushing forward. Afterwards, your body goes through a correctional period where it tries to readjust after a strenuous workout. By doing this, you are allowing the body to have a better grip over your hormones, leading to decreased stress and an increased mood. Another benefit of physical exercise is improvement of your mindset and getting a boost in confidence. Why is this? By putting your body through continual stress, you are forcing it to overcome obstacles. Just like in business, if you overcome an obstacle, you’ll start to feel more confident. Likewise, by breaking through physical obstacles and milestones, you’re teaching yourself that you are capable of pushing through even when the going gets tough. This increases your capability to improve after every workout and this will actually spill out into all other facets of your life over time.
The benefits of regular exercise for busy entrepreneurs are numerous. Exercise can help improve cardiovascular health, increase energy levels, reduce stress, and improve cognitive function. Furthermore, by incorporating exercise into your daily routine, you'll be able to improve your overall productivity and creativity. Regular exercise can also improve mood and lead to better sleep quality, both of which are essential for busy entrepreneurs who need to be at their best every day. By making time for exercise, entrepreneurs can improve their health, well-being, and business success.
7. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness meditation is a practice that involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This healthy lifestyle tip has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and memory, and increase overall well-being. For busy entrepreneurs, incorporating mindfulness into their schedule can help reduce stress and improve productivity.
Suggestions for incorporating mindfulness into a busy schedule:
Start small: Start with short meditation sessions, even just a few minutes a day, and gradually increase the length of your practice over time. It's better to start small and build up the practice than to feel overwhelmed and give up.
Find a quiet space: Find a quiet space to practice mindfulness, away from distractions and interruptions. This could be a separate room, a park, or a quiet corner in the office.
Practice mindful breathing: Take a few deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves the body. This can be done anywhere, anytime, and can help reduce stress and improve focus.
Use guided meditations: There are many apps and websites that offer guided meditations, making it easy to practice mindfulness on-the-go. Find a guided meditation that resonates with you and practice regularly.
Practice mindfulness during everyday activities: Incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities, such as walking, eating, or even brushing your teeth. Pay attention to the sensations and experiences of the activity, without judgment.
8. Stay Organized
Staying organized is crucial for reducing stress and increasing productivity. When things are chaotic and disorganized, it can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Being organized can help streamline tasks, improve efficiency, and reduce stress levels. Here are some benefits of staying organized:
Increased productivity: When everything has a designated place and is easily accessible, it's easier to focus on tasks and complete them efficiently.
Reduced stress: Being organized can help reduce stress levels by creating a sense of control and order.
Improved time management: Staying organized can help manage time effectively and prevent procrastination.
Here are some tips for staying organized in both work and personal life:
Prioritize tasks: Make a list of tasks that need to be completed and prioritize them in order of importance. This can help prevent feeling overwhelmed and ensure that the most important tasks are completed first.
Declutter regularly: Regularly go through items and remove any that are no longer needed or used. This can help create a sense of order and reduce clutter.
Use tools and resources: Use tools and resources such as calendars, to-do lists, and apps to help stay organized and on track.
Create a routine: Establish a routine for daily tasks, such as checking emails or organizing files. This can help create a sense of structure and prevent procrastination.
Keep a clean workspace: A clean workspace can help improve focus and productivity. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up and organize the workspace.
9. Connect with Others
While being a busy entrepreneur can be rewarding, it can also be isolating. Maintaining social connections is essential for overall well-being and productivity. Connecting with others can provide emotional support, foster creativity, and improve collaboration. Here are some reasons why connecting with others is important:
Emotional support: Connecting with others can provide a sense of emotional support, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.
Creativity: Collaborating with others can lead to new ideas and creative solutions.
Productivity: Building strong relationships with colleagues can improve collaboration and productivity in the workplace.
Here are some suggestions for staying connected with family, friends, and colleagues despite a busy schedule:
Schedule time for social connections: Make it a priority to schedule time for social connections, whether it be with family, friends, or colleagues.
Utilize technology: With technology, it's easier than ever to stay connected with others despite busy schedules. Use video conferencing or instant messaging to connect with colleagues or loved ones.
Attend networking events: Attend networking events to meet new people and build professional relationships.
Join clubs or groups: Joining clubs or private groups related to personal or professional interests can provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.
Practice active listening: When connecting with others, practice active listening by being fully present and engaged in the conversation.
10. Set Realistic Goals
For busy entrepreneurs, it's crucial to set realistic goals to maintain motivation and productivity. If goals are too ambitious or unrealistic, it can result in frustration and burnout, whereas achievable goals can foster confidence and a sense of accomplishment. The following are some advantages of setting realistic goals:
Maintaining motivation: Realistic goals can help maintain motivation by creating a clear path to success and avoiding overwhelming expectations.
Boosting productivity: Achievable goals can create a sense of accomplishment and motivation, which can lead to increased productivity.
Preventing burnout: Setting unrealistic goals can lead to burnout and decreased productivity, while achievable goals can help maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Here are some strategies for setting achievable goals in both work and personal life:
Break down goals into smaller steps: Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps to make them more manageable.
Set deadlines: Set realistic deadlines for each step in the process to help stay on track.
Measure progress: Regularly measure progress to see how far you've come and adjust goals as needed.
Focus on one goal at a time: Prioritize one goal at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed and maximize productivity.
Make goals specific and measurable: Set specific and measurable goals to help ensure success.
Celebrate successes: Celebrate accomplishments along the way to stay motivated and maintain a positive outlook.
11. Develop a Consistent Routine
One of my favorite healthy lifestyle tips, you need to get really good at time management and develop a consistent daily routine. When it comes to developing a daily routine, there is no “one size fits all” routine. My best advice to you is to do some trial-and-error in seeing what works for you on a day by day basis.
Daily Routine Example
A good example to look up is Craig Ballantyne’s “Perfect Week Formula”. I’ll also give you my average weekday routine as an example:
5:30am: Wake Up
5:30am - 6:30am: Morning Routine
6:30am - 7:30am: Gym
7:30am - 10:30am: Online Client Work
11:00am - 2:00pm: School
2:00pm - 3:00pm: Down Time
4:00pm - 6:00pm: Podcast/Task List
6:00pm - 10:00pm: In-person Client Work
10:30pm: Wind Down
11:00pm: Lights Out
Again, this schedule and tips for healthy lifestyle work for ME, it may not work for you. I recommend you use this routine and the Perfect Week Formula as a foundation to build your own routine that fits your schedule. You’ll also notice that I grouped everything I do into specific sections, this is called Time-Blocking. By blocking your time into specific sections, you allow for better organization. That way you don’t end up working till 2am every night feeling like you are behind.
